Glo Brite® Systems Environmentally Safe Emergency Exit Signs Eliminate Radiation Risk for Major Retailers

Mchenry, IL (PRWEB) November 26, 2008 -- Glo Brite® Systems, a Jessup Manufacturing Company brand, features a line of emergency exit signs that is increasingly being used by building owners as a safe, energy-efficient alternative to radioactive tritium exit signs.

For decades tritium exits signs were a popular choice for building owners looking to cut costs. They do not require expensive installation or electricity, they are self "nuclear" powered. Tritium is a hydrogen isotope that emits radiation. The only problem is that if damaged they can be very dangerous. Due to their hazardous nature, each tritium radioactive exit sign has its own registration number submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) with seller and user identification. Tritium signs that are damaged or incorrectly disposed of can lead to NRC incident reports requiring corrective action.

"Retailers can't afford the liability," says Al Carlson, vice president of Jessup Manufacturing. "We've seen stores where tritium signs were damaged by a fork lift and just left on the retail shelf. It's not only a safety concern, but the paperwork required for tritium signs add to the administrative costs for a business."

Due to the volatility in producing tritium powered exit signs, most of their manufacturers have been forced to shut down. The one tritium sign company left in North American is located in Canada and has routinely been forced to close its operations because of environmental citations.

According to the Federal Energy Management Program, the best alternative to tritium technology is photoluminescent technology.

Glo Brite® is the market leader in photoluminescent emergency exit signs. These safety signs store the power of ambient light. They actually glow in the dark, so they are safe and do not use any additional energy like electrical exit signs.

"Ecologically, there's nothing greener. Economically, they have no maintenance or electrical costs," says Al Carlson, vice president of marketing. "With no wiring to run, bulbs and batteries to replace or radioactive properties to manage, our new Glo Brite® line of products offers the easiest to install, least expensive and most ecologically friendly emergency exit signs on the market today."

As companies convert to green technology to conserve energy, exit signs are an easy first step in reducing carbon footprints. A building with 100 Glo Brite Eco Exit™ signs can save as much as $3,500 a year in energy costs. Over the life of the product, this will also reduce air pollution by almost a half a million pounds of CO2 compared to electric powered exit signs.

Glo Brite® products are UL 924 Listed and non-toxic, so there are no disposal issues or expense compared to radioactive tritium signs.

"This is the most advanced technology with the highest value to the customer," says Carlson. "There is no advantage to choosing tritium or electrical exit signs in any building today."
